Participants will receive the same exact training law enforcement officers receive throughout the nation in the most up to date NHTSA "DUI/SFST Practitioners" course. All 16 modules will be covered in order for participants to become a SFST practitioner under NHTSA guidelines.

In addition to the NHTSA blocks of instruction, a block of instruction on common errors made by officers during the administration of SFSTs will be covered. Additionally, time will be spent covering the true data behind the 2007 NHTSA publication "The Robustness of the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus Test".

Two live alcohol workshops will be conducted so the participants will be able to administer the SFSTs, as well as observe true physical manifestations (bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, etc.) on volunteers with BACs from 0.00 to 0.15. Students will also be shown how nystagmus can be induced on a person with a low BAC during the HGN test when administered incorrectly and not to NHTSA guidelines.

This course trains officers how to "observe, identify, and articulate" drivers under the influence of drugs and/or a combination of drugs and alcohol during a traffic stop. Emphasis will be spent on analyzing a DRE Face Sheet & DRE Narrative report and how to compare the two with one and other, as well as emphasis on each specific step involved in a 12-step DRE evaluation.
